Discussion:
Error installing Advanced Client on Itanium system

We are deploying SMS 2003 and have come across an error on our Itanium
systems. (These are the only Windows 2003 servers we have so far; all
other servers are Windows 2000). The install gives the following error:

SMS Advanced Client Setup

MSXML support is not installed or is not configured correctly.

Keeping in mind that this is Windows 2003 on Itanium, nonetheless these
systems should (theoretically) be configured as similarly as possible
to our Windows 2000 servers. Any suggestions as to where I can start
looking to track down the problem?

Thanks!

Not at all sure, but downloading & installing msxml seems like a viable
solution.

Kim, thanks for the quick reply. I have seen that as a possibility, but
I am reluctant to go that route without understanding all the
ramifications. How does MSXML ordinarily get installed? Via MDAC or
IIS? What would be the ramifications if it's already installed and I
run that download? I've seen mention of parallel version installations,
and am very nervous about the potential for Java-like version chaos.
:-)

I tried running CCMSETUP.EXE instead, but it just terminates without
any interaction. Why would that fail? And...most importantly...are
there any logs left behind? So far I've been entirely unable to locate
anything.

Kim, further to this, we tried this on one of our test Itaniums and
received the same error. Our suspicion is it's something to do with the
way Windows segregates the 32 bit and 64 bit applications. Does this
sound plausible?

Anything sounds plausible to me when we are going to talk the
architectural differences between 32 bit & 64 bit. If you sell it
convincingly enough I would probably believe that the 32 bits apps
execute on the left side off the cpu & 64 bit ones on the right hand
side.

Only thing I know about the 64 bit versions is that the sms 2003 sp1
client should be supported on it, but haven't had the "pleasure" of
testing it like you have.

Hi,

You mention "Windows 2003 on Itanium", you don't specify any SP. I know that
SMS 2003 SP1 supports Windows Server 2003 SP1 64-bit.

Correct, no service pack. As it happens, I found another 2003 server
(x86) and the client installed fine on that. But that also happens to
be Windows 2003 SP1, so at least two variables there (SP1 vs RTM, 64
bit vs 32 bit).

Well, we're doing better. After installing SP1 and downloading the
latest XML parser, we get past the MSXML error. Now we get almost to
the end and see the following error:

Setup was unable to compile the file
ccmclasses.mof
The error code is 8004402F

The installation then starts to roll back and gives another error:

Warning 25002. Failed to delete
CCM_Service_ErrorHandlerRegistration.Clsid="{0
F95BCE5-2209-488a-B4BC-4396AD233C8D}"
from CCM. The error code is 80041010
